The Embassy of the United Republic of Tanzania in the State of Qatar announces the successful outcome of high-level bilateral discussions held on 14th April 2026 in Doha between H.E. Ambassador Habibu Awesi Mohamed and H.E. Dr. Philip Mshelbila of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF). The meeting reaffirmed Tanzania’s intention to join the Forum as part of its strategy to strengthen its position in the global natural gas sector. GECF welcomed Tanzania’s interest and outlined a clear accession pathway supported by technical guidance. The engagement also served to strengthen cooperation in the gas sector and advance Tanzania’s broader economic diplomacy agenda aimed at attracting strategic investment.
Both sides agreed to work closely toward Tanzania’s participation in the upcoming GECF Ministerial Meeting in October 2026, where its membership application could be considered. The Forum emphasized the benefits of full membership, including access to market intelligence, data, and policy support, while underscoring the importance of sustained high-level engagement. Tanzania also extended an invitation to GECF to participate in the upcoming Power & Energy Africa Conference scheduled for 7th  –9th  October,2026 in Tanzania.
The discussions further highlighted opportunities for enhanced cooperation in investment promotion and institutional collaboration, including through the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC). Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to deepening cooperation, positioning Tanzania to attract strategic investment and accelerate the development of its natural gas sector.
